Has Amotekun Finally Come to Stay?

IDOWU SOWUNMI

Less than 24 hours after the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, proffered practical solutions over the Amotekun controversy, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo along with the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, as well as the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, Thursday met in Abuja with the South-west governors.

The meeting yielded positive results as all the stakeholders agreed that Amotekun should be aligned with the community policing strategy of the Federal Government.

And Amotekun has come to stay!

“The meeting was very fruitful and unanimous resolutions were made on the way forward.

“Having regard to the need for all hands to be on deck in addressing the security concerns across the country, it was agreed that the structure of Amotekun should also align with the Community Policing strategy of the Federal Government.

“It was also agreed that necessary legal instruments will be put in place by each of the states to give legal backing to the initiative and address all issues concerning the regulation of the security structure,” said a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity in the Office of Vice President, Laolu Akande.

According to him, the meeting was at the instance of the governors who had requested to see President Muhammadu Buhari over the controversy surrounding the Amotekun initiative.

However, due to the President’s foreign engagement, he asked the vice president to host the meeting.

Tinubu had Wednesday called for private discussion between the South-west governors and Malami over Amotekun.

“This matter cannot be resolved on the pages of newspapers or by attributing negative motives to either side. The best way to resolve this is still for the two sides to enter private discussions. Either the governors should seek an official but private meeting with the Attorney-General, or the Attorney-General can initiate the contact. Since Amotekun is their initiative, the governors bear the greater onus in seeking the meeting.

“The meeting will initiate further discussion on how to resolve what appears to be a misunderstanding caused by an unfortunate lack of communication. Remedy the gap in communication and the misunderstanding will begin to disappear,” Tinubu had counselled in his widely circulated statement.
